The division bench expressed annoyance over lack of safety measures in schools' vans with regard to CNG cylinders after counsel of Sindh Transport Department informed the court about complete ban on installation of CNG cylinders in schools vans/inter-city buses.
Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar stated that CNG stations should be bound through the directives of Ogra that schools vans and public transport should not be supplied gas. The judge observed that drivers of schools' vans are oblivious to the dangers these cylinders pose to the schoolchildren but drivers don't care safety measures.
The court also inquired regarding the fitness certificates. He asked who such certificates to these vehicles. Who would implement the safety related rules, he inquired.
The SSP Traffic West told the court that gas cylinders from 1863 vehicles had been removed. That meagre amount made Justice Mazhar to remind the police officer that it was not something to cherish because more than 18000 vehicles had CNG cylinders but the police could remove cylinders from just over 1800 vehicles. The court ordered to develop new mechanism. The department should stop living in age of 1965 and adapt itself to the requirement of 2019, SHC directed.
